Verizon borrows patents to countersue TiVo

The whole thing is utterly insane, beyond reason. But hey, you rep what you sow sometimes.

Basically, some massive patent troll has loaned some of their patents to Verizon for the sole sake of suing TiVo. Which is EXACTLY what our founding fathers had in mind when they developed the patent system.

This is beyond stupid. Our patent system is completely broken.

      So patent infringement is OK?

      • 1) Software patents should never be granted in the first place.
        2) The purpose of patents is to protect an actual invention, in exchange for making that knowledge public.
        3) Patent infringement is fine in a moral sense, it's a completely legalistic invention.
        4) Patents shouldn't be granted for obvious inventions under any circumstances.
        5) Independent invention of a patented tool is effectively proof that no patent should have ever been granted.

Verizon invented nothing. The patent troll invented nothing. These patents were never put into practice or commercialized in any real sense. Software patents (yes, even TiVo's) are absurd to begin with. The patents in question are simplistic on their face and should never have been granted.

Do you have an actual question, or are you just going to sit there making more passive-aggressive remarks?
