SUVs are only a small part of the problem. In fact, there is no "big waste" of oil, as you rightly point out. The point is that people in the press would rather beard the "ugly American" than talk about the real vectors of energy consumption.
In line with the "head in the sand" discussion, notice how little discussion there is about the fact that oil is going to get a lot more expensive over the next 10 years, and that the only thing price controls and tax reductions will do is encourage the use of oil to hasten total depletion.
Campaign finance reform, gun control law, hate crime laws, etc. The core issue there is that the government is missing either or both of the resolve or the competence to enforce the laws on the books. Social Security? When the issues are too difficult to discuss without someone coming up with a bigger lie, lie first and biggest!
