Wal-Mart is killing America's economic diversity again

Topeka, KS. Federal Government and Wal-Mart Team Up To Kill Small Businesses

As if Wal-Mart’s impact on small businesses were not devastating enough, now the giant retailer is getting an assist from the Federal government. Just before Christmas, The Family Nutrition Store (FNS) in Topeka, Kansas, which is the only grocery store in the area that solely serves people on the Women, Infant’s and Children’s (WIC) program, shut its doors for good---a victim of Sam Walton’s store and Uncle Sam’s bureaucracy. Under the WIC program, the Federal government provides grants to States for supplemental foods and nutritional education for low-income women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. In Kansas, the WIC program is administered by the state Department of Health and Environment. According to the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper, The Family Nutrition Store was killed off by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which adopted a regulation last year that cut payments to certain stores participating in the WIC program. Similar WIC-only stores in Kansas City, and Garden City, Kansas also shut down. The Family Nutrition Store on California Ave in Topeka, offered grocery items only to those participating in the federal program. Wal-Mart supercenters, which include a full-line grocery store, also sell WIC products---but they sell to a much larger segment of the public as well. In 2006, the USDA changed the WIC rules governing payments to small, WIC-only grocery stores. David Criswell, the owner of The FNS, says new USDA rules ran him out of business. "I think their whole goal was to put small stores out of business," Criswell told the Capital-Journal. Under the old rules, WIC vendors were classified into six pricing levels. Smaller stores, like the FNS, were paid more than larger stores. Vendors like Wal-Mart, which has more buying power, were paid less, because their products cost less. But under the new USDA rules, payments to WIC-only stores "may not result in higher food costs than if program participants purchased their WIC foods at regular vendors," the rule states.

    • Well, no sh*t Sherlock...the whole mission of the Bush administration is to try to drive as many small business as they can out of business. Thus funnel the revenues back to large corporate entities, who then will funnel a percentage of the money back to the GOP under the disguise of Campaign contributions....

Same thing happened under Bush SR....When we was finished, there wasn't one privately owned bank left in Texas.
That's why he wasn't re-elected....But the GOP seemed to have a way to get everyone to forget about that in only 8 years by making Clinton haters out of everyone, thus getting them to vote for Jr. who's made his daddy look like beginner, as he funneled a record breaking 2 trillion dollar out of the U.S. Treasury earmarked for those industries in bed with to the GOP.!

Pretty damn obviously what he mission of the GOP's candidates are..Why Americans still keep voting them in office is just amazing to me...Must be come religious guilt trip, the preachers, who the GOP has bought off with Gov handouts to the tune of 7 billion dollars, are laying on their parishioners to keep em voting for em..

    • Again????

      You can't kill something AGAIN!

If you killed it before, its not available to be killed aain

If you just killed it, you NO ONE killed it before.

You people LOVE to twist words. Do you even understand what you are posting?

And what are you accomplishing with that post? Same thing as with all the other posts?

      LMAOAPTD!!!!!

    • For years WMT has been trying to avoid the status of "government contractor" thus avoiding all the laws and regaulations attached to such contractors. I think they are getting dangerously close now. Maybe they will finally have to document the number of minorities that apply or persons with dissabilities that apply....

    • The free market capitalist system must evade your intellect. It is not that companies want to destroy other companies, it is about competition. Remember the saying: only the strong survive. And in regard to small mom and pop operations, they cannot compete headon due to they lack the buying power which large superstores have. They have to learn to specialize in what they sell. WMT sells just a little of everything, but doesn't specialize. Just like when I need hardware parts for a project, I go to Home Depot, not WMT.

    • The odds of you lying decrease when you stick to cut and paste from other sources. Good job here. There are two questions to consider ?

Did you leave any information out ?...lying by omission again maybe ????

Did you fail to note the added buying power of WIC recipients by shopping low cost providers such as WMT ?

Maybe I missed it, did you ever defend your previous lies which you denied ever making ?

WMT is shrinking is quite a lie. How would you defend a bizarre and irrational statement as that ?

You claimed a flawed study "proved" WMT was the source of an economic problem. You lack the credentials to support such a claim, AND the claim has been disputed by at least two other credible researchers.

Nothing like a basher to make a challenge, get proven as a liar, then wonder off on a new ID.

    • Thank you Walmart for saving our taxes, too!
