Panama City Residents Welcome Back Area's First Walmart

In two months Panama City residents will be welcoming back the area's first Walmart store.
The 23rd Street location closed in 2009, which upset a lot of people.
Many locals were unhappy with the decision to move the Panama City Walmart to the new location in Lynn Haven.
So, they are anxious to be getting the new and improved store at the old site.
Bay County's first Walmart store opened here on 23rd Street back in 1984.
"We had a division one discount store, but didn't have a grocery,” said Tim Cobb, the Walmart store manager. “The community needed a larger store, a supercenter."
Corporate officials built a new supercenter in Lynn Haven and closed 23rd Street.
Then last year, Walmart executives decided to reopen the store.
They negotiated for an additional 30-thousand square feet of space next door, allowing for a much larger space.
The new Walmart Supercenter will not only have the same retail merchandise area as before, but also a full grocery store, bakery and a liquor store.
City officials are pleased with the extra tax revenue, as well as the additional 265 full-time and part-time jobs.
"We are mostly staffed at this point but we still have a few key positions we haven't filled, so we're reviewing applications on a daily basis," said Cobb.
The businesses that neighbor the store should also see an increase in customers.
"We don't have a direct competitor in the plaza, so everyone is excited we're going to bring more traffic through."
The grand opening is set for January 23rd.

    Sentiment: Strong Buy
