    intellectual property

" As a leader in the development of photonic integration, we have protected the intellectual property associated with our PIC manufacturing through a combination of trade secrets, patents and contractual protections. We believe that as a result of the combination of the multiple disciplines that were required to develop our PIC, together with the intellectual property protections that we have established, it will be difficult for others to duplicate the technology we have developed. "

Could someone answer me this: Having worked in the semiconductor industry, I know that a great deal of the intellectual property of an integrated circuit manufacturer is typically the internal knowledge of the fabrication "recipe" of in-house fabricated circuits. (fabless IC mfgrs are of course a different story)

My impression from previous quarterly conf calls and reports is that INFN fabricates its PICs in-house. So it would seem to me that in-house expertise is one of the protections that renders it difficult for competitors to very easily duplicate their work. Do I understand correctly that they do indeed make their own PICs? Assuming so, I guess in-house proprietary fabrication knowledge could fall under the "trade secrets" part of their above statement regarding their intellectual property.

    • My impressions is that trade secrets equates to lessons learned and are valuable if competitors have to follow their PIC recipe. But, the physics might allow others to come up with smarter and cheaper ways which probably explains why PIC currently gets no premium valuation. Dr Welch mentioned that they're always keeping an open mind about external research developments but to maintain an applications lead is tough when they aren't the ones doing the basic science.

    • Yes, they make their own PIC's, and yes this is a big part of their "trade secret" IP.
