mturner, you have done a fine job demonstrating that not only are you an idiot, but a total db as well.
"BtW, they also control what vestments they have in companies for the fund itself, or is that out of their control and companies are assigned to them?"
Your latter statement is correct given VTSMX is an INDEX FUND that mimics (extremely well) the MSCI US Broad Market INDEX. As the market goes, so does VTSMX. Apparently this concept is beyond your mental capacity to comprehend.
"The investment seeks to track the performance of a benchmark index that measures the investment return of the overall stock market. The fund employs a passive management strategy designed to track the performance of the MSCI US Broad Market Index, which consists of all the U.S. common stocks traded regularly on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq over-the-counter market".
Clearly you have a gripe. Had you stated that the US stock market will not have any returns ever, I'd be cool with that, since that's SIMPLY your opinion. But why single out an INDEX fund? Everyone else gets the concept that as the market goes, so does VTSMX. Before you open your mouth or write more nonsense, try learning about the subject; otherwise you will only succeed in demonstrating your complete lack of knowledge on the subject....YIKES!
Try picking on ACTIVELY MANAGED funds and you MAY have a point.
