Unemployment is up across the globe, and much of it is due to the automation of so many jobs. At every CVS store in NYC they laid off most of the cashiers about one year ago replacing them with automated check out.
I resisted for a long tie , but I now realize that thesis the wave of the future. Robotic assembly lines are costing some jobs in USA, but the real cost may be in China where the low-pay workers may find their plants closing as manufacturing is repatriated to reduce transport costs which will be higher than labor costs as the number of workers falls.
What to do?
We might want to extend unemployment benefits, offer free retraining, and take other actions to make unemployment less onerous and enable the unemployed to get work.
Every Conservative screams bloody murder about this idea!
