Forbes, has posted an article today. It says China is exploring builting a new canal across Nicaragua. It has hired a US consultanting firm and The National Railway Construction of China. The article say mention a start
date of 2014 and a finished date of 2020. The demand for commodities from South America and Central, for China will require a new Canal. I am not sure if this will have any impact on additional frieght, for the CSX.
I found the article interesting reading.
Years ago the Atomic energy commission came up with a proposal to use small thermonuclear devices, in government-speak, to blast a canal across Nicaragua. It was similar to the Soviet Union's blasting a harbor with a couple of Atomic bombs . The government of Nicaragua talked Lyndon Johnson out of the idea.
Iit would probably be positive for the shipping community because the Panama Canal and Nicaragua Canal would compete on cost, perhaps reducing fees for shippers.
However, I can't see this being built. The expense, the environmental issues, and then the Panama Canal would probably reduce fees cutting your rate to produce revenues. You combine that with the fact that manufacturing is moving from China to Southeast Asia which means we already have a second canal in the Suez Canal. I just don't see how this would be a good investment.

DOT estimates "rail freight" growth will increase 88% over next 12 years. Rails, ports, ships and even China thinks it will happen. !! WHY... They understand what free trade agreements will do for the US economy........most investors are still clueless......investors "in the know" will take advantage and build stronger positions of rail holdings ! Timeframe of explosion by 2016,,still stands.
