woodnstream: Never knew those pesky Indioans were the first to establish bride burning and a caste sytem.
Every coutry has a caste system . Here its dictated by your wallet. The good thing about our caste system is that you move up or down as the size of your wallet changes.
The Indians at the top were more astute. Their revolutionary caste sytem which is over 2000 years old was entrenched by religion for posterity . That way those on the upper rungs are served by the lower ones forever. Jumping up and down the ladder as we have it here is taboo and against their beliefs. So every Indian knows his place in the pecking order.
As for Bride burning, its a very old tradition. It was used to symbolize love and fidelity of the woman for her dead spouse. With time what was voluntary became an enforceable tradition. That old tradition has once again been re-stretched by husband and In-laws for quick monetary gain and exploitation.
You rightly state that these are cultural differences between the west and India. The big item bonding India to the west is their common love for the Almighty green back.!
People here are so unaware of India. Guys, its not a land of snake charmers as its protected in your books. Open you eyes and see the changing world.
Bride buring: Origins: When the muslims invaded India, whichever land they conquered and the king they defeated, they would take the women folk as prize. So to protect Hindu women from the Muslims, this was devised so that the women would kill herself then fall prey to some muslim ahole.
This is banned and is not at all prevelant in India anymore.
Caste System: This is still prevelant but with the modernization of India, its dying its natural death.
nutsie: Thanks for enlightening us on that part of the world. Never knew the talents in India even extended to charming snakes. I knew the men were good at charming the girls here. My History Book must have missed that one.
Abuse of women be it kerosene dousing or physical violence or dowry extraction is still very much in the news in India. Just do a google search. Old practices dont end that easily the way you project.
As for the caste sytem, it wil never die unless thare is a religous reformation. Every great religion needs that process of self introspection and reform. A review of any Matrimonial column there will prove that the caste sytem is alive and well.!
Yes, the national religion here in the US is definitely Money, followed a close second by sports. That is what we here in the US are all about.
But India is less about the money than the various religious, spiritual and cultural traditions that tie it down and make it so 'backward' in the material sense. Indians live on a higher spiritual plane than do we in the West but a far lower material plane.
So, you see, even there, on the money question, the West and India are poles apart.
The fact remains that we are the former colonial oppressors and deserve to be ripped off of every nickel they can get their hands on.
