Just heard from a Menlo driver. They will get new name. Something like UPS heavy cartage. UPS may also buy another trucking outfit such as Conway. Future of dayton hub is uncertain. China/Asia gateways and distribution systems sound important. This fellow thinks business will pick up. They will still pickup fluff freight as an extra to heavy. It might pan out in 2005 to the new look. Now lets see if the in house PR is solid.
"UPS may also buy another trucking outfit such as Conway."
That doesn't seem to make much sense. If UPS wanted to buy Conway, why wouldn't they have bought it from CNF at the same time they were buying Menlo Forwarding? Why would they want to duplicate all the transaction expenses a second time, when they could have done it all at once?
Well another driver said the new UPS bosses have separated the station personnel and the cartage personnel ( and presumably operations). The current cartage is mostly union. Conway is non-union. If UPS wanted to spinoff Menlo cartage, they could and replace it with either their own cartage system or contract it out like BAX does. So the answer may be union evading tactics. Think of the Fritz ground ops. As far as I know it is non-union and UPS doesn't appear to be rushing in to unionize it. It must show up on the profit sheets. Anyway, pretty soon we'll know for sure.
