Looks like Bell wants to become a successful Canadian version of TimeWarner-AOL. Is the time right now for this type of beast? One things for sure, they are pushing hard into FTTH so this acquisition could make a lot of sense.
BCE Inc. (BCE-T39.89-0.17-0.42%) is buying TV, radio and outdoor advertising company Astral Media Inc. (ACM.A-T48.4612.2133.68%) for more than $3-billion, expanding its major bet on investing in media in order to gain a stronger hold on TV content.
BCE trying again. Competition Bureau gave go-ahead with conditions. Next up CRTC. Will it be approved this time around? BCE CEO seems to want this deal alot, and he seems to be managing the firm well so maybe this will be a good move after all. Stay tuned.
Better to buy content than to spend money building infrastructure and then having to give it away to the competition, at below market prices, to satisfy the government's need to get votes from consumers.
I can't say I particularly like the move, but I certainly hope they will profit from it. In hindsight it was to be expected given they bought CTV a while back, and Bell is deploying FTTN/FTTH. This move positions them to compete more directly with Quebecor/Videotron.
