J.C. Penney cut 27% of its workforce last year as the retailer struggled to turn itself around.
The department store chain slashed 43,000 jobs, according to its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday. J.C. Penney reported a total of 116,000 full-time and part-time workers at the end of its fiscal year that ended February, down from 159,000 workers last year.
as you know, I've been watching our local pennies store at the mall, and I did notice that the sales staff seemed a bit sparse!
I did view the new joe fresh display, it's very attractive, lots of orange "cubes" and signage and stuff....using the 12" tile flooring to help, I'm guestimating the size at about 2600 sq ft
however, there's a huge swath down the center about 8' wide x the 35' depth(, or approx 280 ft of empty space, and several other empty areas of noticable size, and the space that the marketing cubes take up
judging from the prominantly displayed price tags, and comparing with items in other store windows, it looks like the stuff is priced cheap, which makes me wonder if they have enough merchandise to cover the rent in that section of the store?
some of the style/color combos don't look like anything I see women wearing these days
there doesn't seem to be a lot of shopper action during the after dinner hours, either....but it just opened, so we'll need to give it some time
