Cat is currently hiring "Warm bodies" anybody they can possibly get. $15 per hour and the current proposal on the horizon has not been very enticing to bring good workers looking for a career. Turn over is high and killing our ability to deliver a quality product in a cost effective way. Guys that have been in weld training for 1 week were ready to walk yesterday. 95% of CATS shop workers were lined up and ready to hit the streets yesterday.
How do you think CAT has become a global leader? It has not been because 3/4 of the UAW members haven't done an honest days work in years, as you have stated. Perhaps magic? No, the UAW is filled with talented hard working people. This Company will slowly go down the tubes, if we give CAT it's way. The Joliet plant is a perfect example of a work force that has been beaten down by upper managment. In 5 years they have lost half their products they used to produce, quality from that plant is right up there with maybe "Tonka" and talk is that factory will be totaly shut down in less than 5 years. Is that good for local economy? National economy? Or CAT? $10 per hour does not instill pride in a workforce.
The UAW wants to hold on to what we have earned. Your kidding yourself if you think we have not played a MAJOR role in where CAT is today. Thanks for reading this "daclozer" you may reinsert your head in your ass at this point.

      I have to ask:

Are these the same employees I see asleep under machines?

Are these the same employess I see quitting work 30 minutes early to wash hands?

Are these the same employees I see every day waiting in line to punch out right at 3:18?

Are these the same employees I see filing frivolous grievances; as one hardworking brother in solidarity put it "this is how we get back at them and waste time"?

Are these the same hardworking employees that always seem to have time to cat-call females walking through the shop?

One more question, If UAW is what makes Cat great, than why is Cat the largest construction equipment maker in the world, and not John Deere? What is the difference? Could it be..dare I say, management strategy? Or perhaps superior engineers? Perhaps better accountants?

      Love to hear your thoughts

When I was on 3rd shift I've seen people nap on lunch break. Mgmt never minded as long as sparks were flying when the whistle blew.

Are these the same employess I see quitting work 30 minutes early to wash hands?
It's common practice to "turn in production time" a half hour before the shift ends, so that we can contact our supervisor to straighten out the mess Mgmt has made of our work orders.

Are these the same employees I see every day waiting in line to punch out right at 3:18?
5-10 min. before the end of our shift were ready to go home. We are aloted 10 min. to clean up before the shift ends.

Are these the same employees I see filing frivolous grievances; as one hardworking brother in solidarity put it "this is how we get back at them and waste time"?
We have a few "turds in our punchbowl" as they have on the saleried, managment and upper management levels. The line I work on has not had a single grievance in a little over a year.

Are these the same hardworking employees that always seem to have time to cat-call females walking through the shop?
I have worked at CAT for 10 years and I know of only one instance of a UAW member being discharged for sexual harassment. On the other hand I could list 10 instances of management being accused of sexual harassment, one discharge and the remainder reassignments. Much like the catholic church.

One more question, If UAW is what makes Cat great, than why is Cat the largest construction equipment maker in the world, and not John Deere? What is the difference? Could it be..dare I say, management strategy? Or perhaps superior engineers? Perhaps better accountants?

I get along well with Management and the engineers at the shop floor level, Its a group effort to make the products we do. If you kick one in the teeth, Bottom line, the product suffers.

      • I do know people that sleep under machines; During their lunch break. many of these people are working 12 hours per day. We are advised by Cat to wash our hands and any other exposed skin often to avoid dermatitis. We are exposed to many hazardous chemicals. It is a safety issue. On some of my jobs I washed my hands and face every hour. In one area that I worked over an 8 year period we changed cutting fluids 3 times. These chemicals were found to be too dangerous to keep working in. One of these fluids had formaldehyde in it. At one time morticians had the highest labor cancer rates due mostly to formaldehyde. Waiting in line at the clock is an old practice that is not done anymore at our factory. At my plant there are always managers at the clocks watching for anyone leaving early. Several people each year get disciplinary action taken against them for not being in their work are at the bell. NOT lines of people. If this is the practice at other plants I think some managers should be waiting at the unemployment line. I won't argue that there are frivolous grievances filed if you will concede there are managers that play favorites and nitpick over trivial things. As far as the wasting time comment goes. What are the penalties for Cat violating the contract? The only time they pay a price is when they unfairly cheated someone out of work. Other than that the most you get is an insincere apology. Workers face disciplinary action up to and including being fired. Have you ever heard of any managers being fired for violating the contract? It is a contract. If they violate it then wasting their time is something Cat has brought on themselves. Cat-calls? You have got to be kidding me! Sexual harassment has been cracked down on so hard no one does this without facing dismissal. About a half dozen people in our plant have lost their jobs over the last several years over this problem. One was a supervisors son. We recently had an HR person who got caught and should have been fired. Instead he just got forced to retire. Many of the other plants around the world are union, not UAW. We do have good managers and accountants and our engineers are great. Though many of our engineers and accountants are contract people now. I work at Cat. I am a UAW member. I am proud to be a UAW member working at Cat. I do feel lucky to have the job I have. I am not happy that things are getting worse for me during my companies best of times. I really don't think you work at Cat.

      • Ok! my thoughts.
        Well,lets see.
        Deere has better Mgmt.
        Deere has better engineers.
        Deere definetly has better accountants.
Deere is the world leader in farm equiptment.
Deere makes better lawnmowers than cat.
Deere has same great UAW workers.

        Where do you work ?
Could that be the problem ?
        What do you think ?

    • "Guys that have been in weld training for 1 week were ready to walk yesterday"

Then get the hell out as they are not wanted! If you were truly willing to walk after a week / year then you should....IF YOU CAN FIND SOMETHING BETTER ELSEWHERE! Stupidest comment I have ever heard. Remember, people become dis-illusioned in the presence of fools.

    • "Your kidding yourself if you think we have not played a MAJOR role in where CAT is today."

You are correct..."played" as in past tense. A plant (Joliet) does not lose half their products in 5 years if they are producing quality products at competitive cost.

Your reading comprehension is really bad. Joliet is not a UAW plant, they have been working under a contract much like the one CAT has proposed to the UAW for quite a few years. High turnover rates and lack of experience on the shop floor due to slavelabor wages, has reduced "CAT Joliet" to less than half the facility it used to be. All of the buildings at CAT Joliet, have already been sold and CAT is leasing 2 of them. CAT in their infinite wisdom has run "CAT Joliet" into the ground in less than 10 years. Greed sometimes bites you in the ass.
You should go back and read my post AGAIN. Dont be afraid to ask if you run into some big words.

      • Your husband told me that you lost half your product in the last five years. Not having quality sex anymore and you cost him to much.
        Said he's moving down south.
