Former BUCY employees to vote Tuesday on proposed contract. Quote from former Union President sums it up. "It’s totally unfair. No self-respecting union would accept it.” Cat appears to pushing for a contract that is similar to that negotiated with the UAW. Freeze pensions and install a defined contribution plan, freeze wages and new hires start at lower scale, raise employee's health care contributions. That'll be a tough pill for the Steel Workers to swallow. My guess is they walk and face the same replacement worker strategy that the other mid west plants have suffered. There will be a lot of emotion and bluster early on but as summer gives way to fall and the kids need new shoes and school supplies the economic pressure will take over. Give it a few months and they'll collapse and settle for less than what's currently being offered. Just read the history books, you'll see exactly what Cat will do. This will be the best offer, and they'd be wise to take it.
OK step one is complete as forecasted, the rank and file rejected the proposal. Next they'll return to the table and propose another agreement little different than the first one. The rank and file will reject it as well. Eventually they'll call a strike vote and walk. Cat will replace them and we'll see the same result as a dozen times before. What a shame. When will the union members ever learn? They need to strike when you have leverage, settle when you don't. They don't have leverage at this time. Christ they're looking at 40% workforce layoffs. Live to fight another day.
