Refreshing to see people looking at alternatives from a real personal perspective.
I have watched CAT (60)and CMI (23) for while. Never took a position( my bad).
Looks like CMI has run rather well and CAT tripped on the mining issue?, or is it the komatsus and Kubotas?
I bailed out of HON and SNDK with nice gains and are snooping around. CAT keeps coming up.
kevin- DRP into Cat is an excellent plan. I will buy more if it drops to $80. That would be a 3% yield, and they have INCREASED their dividend every year for 50 years. That's an excellent increasing salary for the retirement account.
If you're in this for the next 20 years and don't care about holding a dead money situation, you're on the right track. You'd be a whole lot better off just holding something like the VTI. Don't try to beat the market... you can't do it consistently on a long term basis. This proves it.
There is a good chance of a write-down with the BUC acquisition - otherwise it will be nearly impossible for Cat to report favorably w/o mining making a significant comeback. Cat's gone overweight into mining at exactly the wrong time.
