    • Payday Loans Pay Off For Ezcorp

Pawnshop Firm Focuses On Fast-Growing Areas

It pays to be at the right place at the right time. (ezpwjunky has been saying this for a long time on this message board). Ezcorp (EZPW) is in the sweet spot. When gold prices were going through the roof, pawnshop oerpator Ezcorp benefitted from people trading in their jewelry for cash.

The Austin, Texas-based company used the money to expand into a rapidly-growing area - payday loans. People will obtain a short-term advance on their paychecks for a fee by going to one of its Ezmoney stores. The firm should have 300 payday loan stores by the end of the current fiscal year (which ends on September 30).

Although investment in new stores weighed on the fiscal 2005 results, they have already yielded positive returns this year. It also offsets the negative effect of retreating gold prices (ezpwjunky has made many references to this in the past few months on this message board).

Thompson's First Call consensus expects fiscal Q4 EPS to rise 67% to $.45 cent per share. For the year EPS is due to surge 81% to $1.90 (there are some people on this board who think it will be $3.00 in fiscal 2007). That is quite an improvement for Ezcorp! Compared with a 4% earnings decline in fiscal 2005. The past 3 quarters earnings growth has been accelerating.

The firm also raised its full year guidance at the end of July toward the higher end of expectations. EZPW EPS results are due November 9.

At the end of June 50 mutual funds owned EZPW shares up from 38 at the end of March.
