Mostly just a place-holder posting. Of course I didn't like the miss (and it IS a miss. In fact, vs the whisper numbers, a large miss). I didn't like a deal to acquire a novel business closing in the week of the earnings release.
Interesting discussion of differernces among the various types of gold business (sale vs pawn; scrapping vs resale). Diamond auction mentioned, which was unusual (there ARE people talking up diamonds as a store of value)
He actually rather conspicuously DIDN'T put them on the spot. He made the point and then said he'd take any further discussion off-line. As you may have noticed, shutting up after making a point is a talent I don't have. I admire it in others.
The company is taking on the look of a gangly teenager, with limbs farther than ever from the middle and decreased coordination. If I try to plot a long term trajectory, EZ seems to be trying to grow into a multinational financial services giant, starting from the edges of the business and only generating the banking core at the end. In a sense, that's how the banking system grew originally, with virtual gold transfers [like debit cards] and factoring [like pawn] as the starting points.
