Nasdaq
tumbles in heavy morning sell-off
NEW YORK, Aug 21
(Reuters) - The Nasdaq tumbled more than a full percent in
the first three minutes of trading Friday as fears of
an emerging markets crisis sparked a sell-off in
U.S. stocks.
Wall Street feared that the
troubles of the teetering Russian markets were mobilized
and heading for Latin America.
At 0933, the
Nasdaq was off 19 points or one percent to 1813. It fell
slightly further in the next ten minutes of trading to
stand at 1809, a loss of 23 points.
Breadth was
sharply negative, with 1721 decliners compared to 685
advancers.
.
Among the top gainers was Magal Security (MAGSF -
news), up 19 percent in relatively light trading, adding
19/32 to 3-11/16. The Israeli-based company makes
computer systems that identify intrusions and systems that
detect explosive devices in luggage.
