James Cameron Now Planning 3 'Avatar' Sequels, First Set for December 2016

    Good news, bad news.
Good news is we will now have 3 Avatar sequels instead of 2 that should be the premier releases in the IMAX movie slate for Christmas 2016, 2017 and 2018 and help boost the gross sales for 2016-2019. By then the network should be at least 300 - 500 theaters bigger than by the end of 2013 including some really big screens with Laser Projection seating up to 1,000 and a bigger JV and International footprint.
Bad news is we have to wait 3 full years from this Christmas.
Since Peter Jackson has already spoken for Christmas 2013 and 2014, and 2015 has Star Wars and a few other big titles slated it does make sense for Cameron and Landau wait until 2016 to claim the next 3 Christmas's for Avatar. I doubt many studios will counter program against Avatar with any meaningful titles.
That is unless Avatar 2 disappoints. Since Cameron is credited with one of the best sequels ever in Terminator 2 I would not bet on it.
Cameron also probably needs the time considering how long he took to do Avatar. I have heard him say that so much of the technology and artwork they will be using was part of the original, they can leverage those assets to do the next one faster, easier and somewhat cheaper. I have also heard him talk about how far they have progressed already with the technology since Avatar and I can only imagine how far they might go by 2016.
IMAX did $250 million with Avatar in 2009 I much could they do in 2016-2019?
Anyone care to guess on what value that presents to IMAX? 2015 might be their best year to sell the company on those anticipated revenues.
100 per share sounds like a nice round number.
