Hey Bill, earnings is usually reported as EPS. Shares outstanding is directly involved in this calculation. Do you really think management isn't aware of this? What if you can increase shares to increase profit at a higher rate (through financing, employee incentives, etc.)? You act as though management is increasing shares through some sort of secret scandal. It's all disclosed, out in the open, and is generally accepted by most.
