You guys have chosen not to mention what is going on right now. AMAT is going full blast in to solar, second there are few companies like solar thin film that are making solar sheets at the fraction of the cost. To allow gasoline to go up $100 a barrel that was brilliant, now the money is there for people to develope new ways. This field just started, and I'm not sure CY has a monopoly over it. Last week we saw a car running on pressured air. We will see the days when we can tell the Iranians to stuff the oil in a dark place.
Solar thin film has quality problems and the problems are not easy to fix. In Europe lots of windmills are having also problems, but I am not aware of any problems with the Solar panels from SPWR.
Please post if you find different info. If I am wrong, I rather be corrected than lose my money.
Seems to be a lack of morals and ethics in all walks of life.
Solar for your home....Your right, with the price of electricity skyrocketing, demand has outstripped supply. Nevertheless, conservative payback for smaller <5kw systems is still 10-12yrs or 8-10% ROI, based on $5k installed cost per KW and a utility rate w taxes of $0.10/kwh. This will improve once more panel capacity comes on line. The unit cost will drop, the supply curve will shift, and the demand will explode.
FSLR announce yesterday their CURRENT (and it's going down)cost of manufacturing is $1.12 per watt. It's cheaper than oil for daytime power production RIGHT NOW. Why do you think FSLR's revenue is up 300% year over year. Large power producers are a high percentage of their customers!!
but what do I know as an electrical engineer with an interest in alternative power for years??? shorts are much better informed???
In 2 years Solar will be half the price it is now. Payback for a home system will be 6-8 years after the rebates. After that your electricity is FREE!!!. The real growth is by the utility industry. They see the handwriting on the wall. They are building out windpower now at a breakneck pace. Solar is just now hitting the profitability point for the large producers.
You stick with your oil from Venezuela and Iran. I can't wait to out-accelerate you in my electric car!!
