Report: Delta expecting millions in new ObamaCare costs

    Sam Baker - 08/22/13 05:51 PM ET

Delta Air Lines is expecting its healthcare costs to rise dramatically because of President Obama's healthcare law, the conservative website said Thursday.

RedState said it had obtained a copy of a letter Delta sent to the Obama administration in June outlining additional costs the company will face because of the Affordable Care Act.

The letter says Delta's total healthcare bill will rise by almost $100 million next year, including the cost of inflation. It outlines ObamaCare provisions that the company says will cost it $38 million.

The provision allowing children to stay on their parents' healthcare plans has added $14 million in healthcare costs, the letter states, and the company anticipates spending another $14 million as more employees sign up for insurance in order to comply with the law's individual mandate.

A new fee to help fund new insurance exchanges will cost the company another $10 million, Delta said in its letter.

The company said it does not plan to cut workers' hours to avoid providing healthcare coverage, and that its healthcare plan already meets the law's coverage requirements.

The airline expressed concern, however, over the law's tax on especially generous healthcare plans, saying it might have to scale back benefits before the tax takes effect.
