Need to know more about it. Looking to retire in florida in the next few years. My accountant said it's a very laid back place by the GOM. Looking for something walking distance to the beach.
My suggestion would be to look over the Englewood, Venice area. Englewood is fairly undiscovered. Manasota Beach is wonderful. No high rises in Englewood. Plenty of free parking at the beach if you need it. Bradenton has some pretty tough sections.
Isn't that where all the freaks from the Ringling Bros. circus retired? I saw a show named "City Confidential" a number of years ago. The story was about a guy named "Lobster Boy" who had clawed hands and feet. Lobster Boy grew up real mean and his son-in-law killed him. Caught in the mix was 'Midget Man'. I remember that they said the freaks from the Ringling Brothers had a city down around those parts where they all lived.
We have been living on the GOM in Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island for the last 9 yrs. Everything you read about the island is true. No high-rises, no fast food joints, very laid-back, beautiful beaches, nothing like it in Florida. The only problem is, it has now been discovered!
Grey, I have lived in the general West FL area since 1998. AnnaMaria Island is my favorite stretch of beach. White sand beaches as far as you can see. Do visit, the surrounding areas are great as well. If you have never visited West FL beaches , you are in for a treat.
Thepsychizn is spot on about Greensboro NC as well, it's not coastal living, but very friendly people and just beautiful landscape. Depends what kind of retirement you want. I say visit both, and stay a while.
Isn't that where the average age of the transplanted inhabitants is death. All kidding aside, I heard that there are plenty of restaurants serving up "early bird dinner specials". Most start around 3PM according to local lore. Like blue hair? This is your paradise. Enjoy a leisurely drive at 35MPH on the interstate? And driving with your left directional lights on fully 2 miles before you take a right hand turn? You have reached your Valhalla. And don't forget, there are topless sections of some beaches, therefore if you like looking at semi-nude 85 year old women with hooters slapping up against their knees and getting a tan where the sun almost reaches, you will think you died and gone to heaven.
Before you decide, take a look at Lake Oconee, Greensboro, GA. Beautiful, no barnacles on the bottom of your boat. Great golf courses. Retirees in Florida are leaving for Georgia lake communities and the north Georgia mountains.
I love Georgia. I worked for CBS Sports for many years, did the Masters from 1980 to 1990. If I were to retire to Georgia it would be Savannah. The reason for Florida is the Tax situation. No State taxes on retirement income, Cap Gains or Dividends. The beaches on the GOM side of Florida are beautiful. I don't plan to do any boating or play golf, but walking the beach and being a beach bum I can do.
