spoke with several people in the ny, and national banking circles, and it seems that the only likely takeover partner for af would be either jpmorgan chase or citicorp;
the reasons for this are obvious; af is basically a ny bank, i doubt that any money center bank would come into ny and try to battle either citicorp or chase; do you think bank america would try that? not going to happen..
there are no other banks in this region with the potential to take over af, except for maybe bank of new york, however they had not been too aggressive over recent years,
anyway, doubt any action will occur before summer....
I doubt Citi or JP Morgan would be targeting AF aggressively. The only two serious candidates are NYB and WM. It just comes down to George deciding to sell(I thought that would have come by now) and whom he thinks is the best bank to hook up with.
About 6 months ago AF brought in a new customer computer system using Compaq flat screens. If AF was interested in being taking over the system would be compatible to that of the take over company. Any of the banks you mention using a similar computer system?
