    Golden opportunity for Align

    http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060202/sfth097.html?.v=27

"In this Office Action, the examiner preliminarily rejected all 29 claims of the '893 patent. This non-final initial Office Action is considered routine in patent reexaminations, and now presents Align with its first opportunity to respond to the Patent Office's review and interpretation of the prior art with respect to these patent claims. Align is prepared to and will respond promptly to the Patent Office."

The people that write ALGN's press releases have got to be chuckling while they write that stuff.

    • Of course. My apologies. I wasn't trying to offend anyone, I just found it interesting.

    • That's less than useful information.

My understanding is both companies sterilize/disinfect aligners before packaging with liquid disinfectants.

Such as Sporox(TM). There are many types of liquid disinfectant on the market and commonly used in dentistry.

Look it up and get educated.

    • Read it for yourself. It states in 1997 that 100% of the water distributed to households in this area is disinfected. I believe page 38.

    • how is the water in juarez?

    • Cheaper material or cost? I found this interesting. Makes you wonder what OC is using to pour their plasters and wash the aligners with.

      Most Lahoris drinking contaminated water

      By Khawaja Naseer

LAHORE: Lahoris face serious health hazards due to the condition of drinking water because 80 percent of the samples taken by the Punjab governments Epidemiology Laboratory Institute of Public Heath (ELIPH) from 222 various locations in the city have been found contaminated.

However, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) officials claimed that the water the agency provided was clean and got contaminated in the distribution system because of old pipes. During the period between June 20, 2005, and July 5, 2005, about 15 residents of Malipura, Merzipura and Kasurpura died due to diarrhoea and cholera. Interestingly, the water samples in the above-mentioned areas were also contaminated.

WASA officials have also told the CDGL that dark water had increased in the city and the water level had decreased from 400 feet to 700 feet.

On the directions of the City District Government Lahore (CDGL), ELIPH officials took random water samples from 222 areas of the city for bacteriological examination. The ELIPH report revealed that only 44 samples were fit for human consumption while the rest (178 samples) were found contaminated.

Water samples from Lahore District Nazim Mian Amir Mahmoods residence and Lahore District Coordination Officer Mian Ijazs office were also found to be unfit for human consumption.

ELIPH also discovered that the water supply to important and posh localities including the Punjab Civil Secretariat, where many Punjab ministers and secretaries operate from, was also unfit for human consumption. The same situation prevailed at General Officers Residences (GOR-I, II and III).

Water in upscale localities including Model Town, Shadman Society and various areas in Gulberg was also found contaminated. CDGL has allocated Rs 2 billion to the Water and Sanitation Agencys (WASA) budget for the current year. It has also announced an exclusive project for installing water filtration plants in each union council to keep the citys water clean. The issue has been addressed many times at medical forums and events with people saying contaminated water is the root cause of Hepatitis A, B and C, besides triggering diarrhoea and other diseases.

Thanks for the response on cleaning aligners.

I figured there were simple ways to do it.

<<< A patient cannot access the information directly with the Invisalign web site>>>

So maybe a feature needs to be added so patients can access the personal info of interest to them, without docs giving out their passwords ?

    • A toothbrush and toothpaste do wonders! Even a good rinse under a faucet helps. Denture or retainer cleaner should be good as well.

If you want to go all out, Align has a kit of chemicals and I believe an ultrasonic cleaning apparatus. However, the aligners are worn for a short enough time that I've never worried about getting that exotic or asking the patients to spend that kindo of exra money.

The aligners will tend to crack after a few weeks of wear. This is an issue where someone someone has more aligners on one arch of teeth than the other, and continues wearing the last aligner on one arch while finishing up the other. The solution is to order the Align retainers.

On another note, someone asked me about accessing the Clincheks. That has to be done through your treating dentist's web site or in the office of that dentist. A patient cannot access the information directly with the Invisalign web site.

    • I have had resonably good luck having patients use oxyfresh, 1 tsp/8 oz of water, efferdent works well too.

Not sure. But I would think Align could recommend something that would work and not damage the properties of the aligner material.
