As of December 31, 2011, 72% of our online students were female, 49% have identified themselves as minorities and the average age of our online students was 36.
Higher education was supposed to give historically disadvantage groups a step up. With an 85% failure / drop out rate and a $200 per student academic spend, these people are getting trapped in a system that does not yeild successful outcomes but leaves them with student loans that cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy.
The admission counselors sell people on thinking this second-rate online degree will be worth something to them in today's ultra-competitive job market. If graduates from bona fide universities are having a hard go of it, why would a degree from a school who gets their accreditation denied have any value? When prospective students (Ashford calls them leads by the way) balk at the idea of taking on a $50,000 student loan plus interest, the Counselor shames and belittles them into enrolling.
