after market SONC rises and Tom Gardner

It is interesting how many Shorts are posting pessimistic commments today. For example, one at 9:09 a.m. asserts, with no explanation or data, that "insiders will probably be selling all day."

In contrast, look at the positive SONC data in my 1/2/08 post at 10:35 a.m. Or this quote in quotation marks below, which, while not hard data, is from an influential full-time stockpicker and co-founder of Motley Fool. I respectfully submit Tom Gardner's view has more substance than any of the nervous Shorts who are posting today, perhaps trying to reduce their losses:

"[T]he fastest route there [to stock selection success] is to understand how companies achieve competitive greatness. What are the commercial features that help their stocks rise 10, 200, or 5,000 times in value? Here are three of my favorites.

    Three principles of commercial greatness
    1. Replication. The very best public companies have a replication model that drives growth indefinitely. Consider five-year market-beating chains such as Sonic (Nasdaq: SONC), BJ's Restaurants (Nasdaq: BJRI), and GameStop (NYSE: GME)."

The quote is excerpted from Mr. Gardner's Motley Fool article of 1/2/08.

As for what market movers and mutual funds might be doing with SONC today and next week, I draw more credence from the fact that after hours last night (when amateurs like me are not trading), SONC rose well above $21 per share. Why sell below $21 per share today?

    Best wishes.

    • I dont think that anyone is shorting SONC because it is a poorly managed company, but rather than the whole sector will go down. When the rise in oil prices start to increase gas prices, it will be a domino effect that impacts pricing...and people will start conserving $$$ and not eat out as much...this is going to be a bear market, and everything will go down. So SONC being up 6% in a down market is a good opportunity to short.
