Professor Develops Cutting-Edge Detector Technology for Astronomical Observations

Semiconductors have had a nice run, but for certain applications, such as astrophysics, they are being edged out by superconductors. Ben Mazin, assistant professor of physics at UC Santa Barbara, has developed a superconducting detector array that measures the energy of individual photons. The design and construction of an instrument based on these arrays, as well as an analysis of its commissioning data, appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

"What we have made is essentially a hyperspectral video camera with no intrinsic noise," Mazin said. "On a pixel-per-pixel basis, it's a quantum leap from semiconductor detectors; it's as big a leap going from film to semiconductors as it is going from semiconductors to these superconductors. This allows all kinds of really interesting instruments based on this technology.".....................

It looks like tax selling has kicked in a little early for AMSC. At least SinEVIL is circling the drain. I'll have to see what AMSC is doing in December. Good luck to you!

January is a more interesting month, IMO.

It seems very clear to me that there is nothing in the fundamentals that has moved the share price over the last two years and change. This is obvious when you look at the comparison chart for XAU and amsc over two years.

9 quarters ago the finacial picture was released by amsc after almost a year of complete silence on the finacials following the Sinovel corporate homicide attempt. Generally speaking the picture for amsc was very dire when those finacial numbers were released 9 quarters ago and the situation remains dire today. The dwindling cash position is perhaps offset by the emergence of the new 2g production lines and increased wire deliveries.

I am not saying these things bamalce out exactly. I am saying the situation is still dire and the prognosis is still a guess like it was when the news came out two years ago.

The share price for amsc has relected this consistancy in the prognosis. amsc share price has reacted to market forces almost exactly like XAU since October of 2011.

The lows of amsc share price have been defined by the price of XAU throughout the past nine quarters except for the period between the 2'nd & 3'rd quarter cc last year. I challenge you to explain that XAU and amsc are so closly intertwined in price. If I am not mistaken you are among those who have ridiculed this observation.

Getting back to why January is more interesting to me than December, notice that in December 2012 amsc share price spiked up by 40% and stayed there for two months. There was no similar spike in XAU share price.

If amsc share price does not go up significantly in January then XAU share price will move well ahead of amsc. A rare situation. It has happened only for one 3 month period out of the last 25 months.
