    What if?

I'm from AK, and the Exxon Valdez spill is still evident after more than 20 years.

How could the Gulf spill have been so large, yet everything is "back to normal" and the beaches cleaned so soon?

Maybe it was magnified in the media, and much smaller than reported.

    • Two big differences:
The oil was spilled onto the beaches in Alaska so it couldn't be dispersed by currents

The GOM is obviously much warmer - dispersed oil in the water column in warm water is catabolized by bacteria much much faster. Most of the oil from the Macondo spill is probably gone now.

    • First off, the oil that was spilled in the gulf was a lot lighter, but more importantly the waters are a lot warmer, and there is a lot more movement and dispersement. Remember, the oil eventually breaks down. Higher temperatures played a huge part in that. I have a few friends who are environmentalist that worked on the both spills, and all along they said the BP spill would be gone in a few months. I have heard that if you pick up a few rocks in Alaska, you can still find tar balls.
