The way things have been going, I see Adaptec folding up shop this year. I think they will sell the real estate and all other assets and move them into companies within India soon. All employees have been trending to be from India. The R&D folks and manufacturing are out of the US. The question must be asked why have any part of Adaptec in the US. Adaptec has played the tax advantage game where they were first encouraged to invest off shore. Now they are trying to encourage to bring assets & personal back but over the last ten years Adaptec has gone from the leader in the sector to oh yeah I remember those guys.
They might have already written the press release and just waiting for some big event to announce it so it is barely noticed.
If India & Pakistan "get it on", things might not happen in India but somewhere else near there like Indonesia.
Where will the world economy recover first? Watch everyone hop on the bandwagon and set up shop there.
The time for Adaptec to "adapt" has come & gone. Qlogic lesft them in the dust 10 years ago when they were a small-medium size company just making SCSI adapter cards. Qlgogic even did a VL bus card trying to be the leading edge. Adaptec had a name, great quality and other attributes that are long gone and can't be sold with the name these days. Patents are only good for 20 years, Adaptecs useful patents, mainly SCSI, must be near gone.
If they sold cheap to IBM or Qlogic no one would argue, it is long overdue.
No continent and no country on earth is in good shape for near and mid term economic recovery. Its the triumph of globalism, spreading the pain of failed industrial strategies like a virus. Look at it this way countries with the least recent downturns are the poorest and gradually they are succumbing as well.
Offshore onshore doesn't really matter both will fail. India is poised for an economic crash it can't comprehend, as is china, as is europe, as is the united states each will take their surrogate trade partners with them as they collapse. This is why global trade advocates make very poor adults, adults know that as disease spreads you isolate yourself from the affected and are responsible for your own recovery. Global trade advocates believe that spreading suffering and ill health will magically make you immune to disease. This is why poor countries without industrial economies and with limited trade are likely to suffer the least.
Sell cheap to whom? Layoffs and scaling back are universal. I hear companies say : "Oh in this market were going to look for deals" and I wonder why didn't someone teach these executives what 'market' and 'deal' means when they were kids. They use the word 'economy' and I about die laughing. 'In this economy' sounds sort of like saying 'between my old life, but right next to my insides'. Pure gibberish.
