    • OBAMACARE CRITICS' LATEST CAMPAIGN IS THE POLITICAL EQUIVALENT OF A HAIL MARY

      Wendell Potter | HuffPost | 08/27/2013

OPPONENTS OF OBAMACARE KNOW THAT TIME IS NOT ON THEIR SIDE. IF THEY CAN'T KILL THE HEALTH CARE LAW BY THREATENING TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT, AS SOME REPUBLICANS ARE SUGGESTING, THE GAME WILL BE OVER, AND THEY KNOW IT. THAT'S BECAUSE THERE IS AN EXPIRATION DATE ON THEIR LONG-RUNNING CAMPAIGN TO SCARE THE BEJESUS OUT OF AMERICANS ABOUT THE AWFUL THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN IF HEALTH CARE REFORM IS NOT MORTALLY WOUNDED BY YEAR'S END.

FEAR-MONGERING HAS A SHELF LIFE. THE STRATEGY THE PRESIDENT'S OPPONENTS HAVE BEEN USING TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC OPINION IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT PEOPLE FEAR THE UNKNOWN. MOST OF US JUST DON'T LIKE UNCERTAINTY.

President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law on March 23, 2010, but the most important consumer benefits and protections won't go into effect until January 1, 2014. That has given the president's political adversaries three and a half years to spread lies and misinformation.

BECAUSE SUPPORTERS OF THE LAW HAVE BEEN OUTSPENT BY HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ALREADY -- WITH MUCH OF THAT CASH COMING FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES AND THEIR BUSINESS PALS WORRIED ABOUT SHRINKING PROFIT MARGINS -- IT'S LITTLE WONDER THAT OPINION SURVEYS CONTINUE TO SHOW THAT MORE AMERICANS OPPOSE THE LAW THAN SUPPORT IT.

BUT THOSE OPINION POLLS WILL START TO CHANGE IN A FEW MONTHS WHEN AMERICANS REALIZE THAT THEIR WORST POLITICALLY INSPIRED FEARS HAVE NOT BEEN REALIZED, AND THAT, GOSH DARN IT, THINGS ARE ACTUALLY BETTER THAN THEY USED TO BE.

Having played a role in similar campaigns designed to mislead the public by spreading fear in hopes of defeating profit-threatening legislation, I know how frantic the anti-Obamacare folks must be right about now.

Although efforts to repeal the law have fallen short in Congress no fewer than 40 times, Republicans have still benefited significantly from their years-long campaign against the legislation. Those efforts helped them more than anything else to win control of the House in 2010. Several Congressional Republicans reportedly have been meeting weekly over the past several months to develop new tactics to keep the game going. They apparently believe there is nothing to lose by continuing to foster what is known in the world of psychology as anticipatory anxiety. Yet they have to know by now that the expiration date for their obfuscation is fast approaching.

As Dr. Srini Pillay, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, notes, anticipatory anxiety is a negative projection about an unknown outcome. Shrewd political strategists know that many are hardwired for anxiety about unknown outcomes. Which is why all campaigns against a proposed law or regulation are fear-based. And they work. Until, of course, the unknown becomes known and it turns out life is not as bad as we feared.

We've been told by people who want to take over our government that we must fear Obamacare because it will be a job-killing and grandma-killing government takeover of health care that will destroy the best health care system in the world. But folks, that's a dog whose hunting days are numbered.

SOME POLITICIANS HAVE EVEN SLIPPED UP AND LET AN UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH SLIP OUT: THAT WHEN THE AMERICANS THEY'VE SPOOKED ABOUT OBAMACARE FIND OUT IN A FEW MONTHS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN MISLED AND REALIZE THAT THE LAW HAS MULTIPLE BENEFITS, THEY WILL NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THE BAD OLD DAYS THAT WERE SO PROFITABLE FOR THEIR BIG POLITICAL CONTRIBUTORS.

OBAMACARE HATERS NEED TO LOOK MORE CLOSELY AT THOSE SURVEYS THEY CITE TIME AND AGAIN TO "PROVE" THAT MOST AMERICANS WANT TO GET RID OF THE LAW. WHILE A RECENT GALLUP POLL SHOWED THAT 49 PERCENT OF AMERICANS DISAPPROVE OF THE LAW AND 41 PERCENT APPROVE, THE DETAILS OF JUST ABOUT EVERY POLL ON THE SUBJECT REVEAL THAT A SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF THE DISAPPROVERS ACTUALLY THINK THE LAW DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH TO PROTECT US FROM ABUSIVE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND MONEY-HUNGRY DOCTORS AND HOSPITALS. THIS MEANS THAT THOSE WHO WANT TO REPEAL OR DEFUND OBAMACARE BECAUSE THEY THINK IT GOES TOO FAR ARE IN THE MINORITY.

Be forewarned: This doesn't mean that come January 1 the warriors will raise the white flag and forget about Obamacare. Because 2014 is an election year, the job then will be to create false or misleading perceptions about the law, and they'll attempt to do that through the use of selective statistics and anecdotes. Trust me on this. I used to do that kind of work for a living. And trust me on this, too: The anti-Obamacare campaign has never really been about overturning the law as much as it has been about winning elections.

    • WHO IS THE TEA PARTY? EPISODE 3: HEALTH CARE AND OBAMACARE

      21/08/13 | Articles Memes | Liberal Bias

With Tea Party conservatives holding so much power in the House of Representatives, it’s important to remind ourselves of who the Tea Party really is.

The most important thing to “real conservatives” today is getting rid of Obamacare. Not only have the House Republicans voted to repeal it 40 times, but the right-wing talk show hosts–Sean Hannity, Mark Levine, Rush Limbaugh–are pulling no punches when talking about how this is our last chance to rid ourselves of this evil law. We must not only do everything possible to defund and annihilate Obamacare, but we must completely destroy any Republicans that stand in our way. On the radio, they are calling any Republicans who are not willing to completely burn down the country in order to repeal Obamacare “cowards”, “.

And all of the whipping-to-a-frenzy is having some effect. Marco Rubio came on Sean Hannity’s radio program specifically to talk about the fact that Tea Party Republicans should shut down the government unless Obamacare gets defunded, and oh by the way they should then blame the shut-down on Obama.

Of course, the fact that the Tea Party is opposed to a government solution to problems with private health insurance doesn’t stop them from blaming Obama for the high cost of private health insurance.

In fact, in the very same conversations where they complain that Obamacare will destroy civilization, Tea Partiers also loooove to proudly blame Obama for the high cost of private health insurance.

This is who the Tea Party is: THE TEA PARTY IS THE ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO SIMULTANEOUSLY IS ANGRY ABOUT BOTH OBAMACARE AND HIGH PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE COSTS.

If you think there’s anything inconsistent about that, well that’s just your liberal bias!!

    • OBAMACARE IS “ADDICTIVE,” WARNS TED CRUZ

21/08/13 | Articles Memes | The Daily Edge

Ted Cruz is emerging as one of the GOP’s most vocal opponents of Obamacare.

HE’S PARTICULARLY WORRIED THAT AMERICANS WILL GET “ADDICTED” TO HEALTHCARE THAT’S ACTUALLY AFFORDABLE, COVERAGE FOR PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS, PREVENTIVE SCREENINGS, VISION AND DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN, BETTER CARE AND PROTECTION FOR SENIORS, COMBINED WITH NO ANNUAL LIMITS ON COVERAGE, AND THE FACT THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES CAN NO LONGER DROP YOU WHEN YOU’RE SICK.

THIS KIND OF DANGEROUS SOCIALISM IS SOMETHING CRUZ HAS SEEN FIRST HAND, FOLLOWING HIS SAFE AND HEALTHY BIRTH IN A SOCIALIST CANADIAN HOSPITAL IN 1970.

According to Cruz, just a taste of better, lower-cost healthcare will get Americans “addicted” to the sugary sweetness of not watching your child die of an otherwise treatable disease. He’s scared that once Americans realize that their risk of medical bankruptcy has diminished, they may never want to go back to the good old days of worrying that insurance company “Death Panels” will deny their claims or drop their coverage.

To stop this, Cruz is willing to shut down the US government, throw the economy into a tailspin and say a prayer that there won’t be any new pandemics overwhelming the nation’s Emergency Rooms anytime in the future. In his mind, Emergency Rooms are where 30 million Americans should be camped out each day getting their cancer treatments, mammograms and colonoscopies or something.

Or maybe he just doesn’t want Americans to enjoy the kind of quality healthcare he and the Palin family used to sneak into Canada to get when they needed it, eh?

      • PASSIVE RESISTANCE WON’T KILL OBAMACARE EITHER
BARBARA SHELLY | The Kansas City Star

Obamacare haters first looked to the U.S. Supreme Court to kill health care reform. When that didn’t work, they fixed their hopes on Mitt Romney’s election and a Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate. Foiled again.

OPPONENTS IN WASHINGTON AND STATE LEGISLATURES ARE NOW TURNING TO PASSIVE RESISTANCE. If you follow the legislatures in Missouri and Kansas you see how it works. REFUSE TO SET UP A STATE INSURANCE EXCHANGE. TURN DOWN AN OPPORTUNITY TO REFORM MEDICAID AND GET MORE PEOPLE INTO HEALTH INSURANCE. CHEER CONGRESS AS IT DENIES FEDERAL AGENCIES THE FUNDS NEEDED TO GET THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT UP AND RUNNING.

Make the rollout as bumpy as possible. And when you detect a stumble, declare the entire law a failure.

THERE’S JUST ONE PROBLEM WITH THIS SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY. FOR CONSUMERS, THE LAW IS ACTUALLY WORKING VERY WELL.

Insurers can no longer not cover a child with a pre-existing condition, and that protection will apply to adults in 2014. Lifetime limits on coverage have been banned. At least 80 percent of what consumers pay in insurance premiums must be spent on medical care. New insurance plans must pay for checkups and preventive measures without co-pays or deductibles. Health plans are easier to read and understand.

A tracking service compiled by the Henry G. Kaiser Family Foundation shows that, of 57 provisions scheduled to be carried out by the end of 2012, all but two are in place, and the provisions for this year are rolling out on schedule.

The biggest, trickiest parts of the law are yet to come, however, and the efforts to obstruct are making a mark. Congress didn’t expect 33 states to default to a federally run insurance marketplace. Getting the exchanges set up and ready for the start of open enrollment on Oct. 1 is looking like a titanic task, made harder by Congress’ refusal to allocate sufficient funds to educate consumers on how to use the new system.

It also appears more than half the states won’t expand Medicaid eligibility this year, despite the extraordinary flexibility from President Barack Obama’s administration in allowing states to craft their own their own models.

That will prevent the Affordable Care Act from achieving its coverage goals, no doubt to the glee of the Republican governors and lawmakers who refused to cover more people. BUT THOSE SAME OBSTRUCTIONISTS WILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CITIZENS STILL CAN’T HAVE ACCESS TO A DOCTOR, AND WHY HOSPITALS REMAINED BURDENED WITH UNINSURED PATIENTS, WHEN FEDERAL MONEY IS AVAILABLE TO PROVIDE THEM WITH COVERAGE.

AS IT HAS FROM THE BEGINNING, THE CRIPPLING OF OBAMACARE RELIES ON OMISSION AND DISTORTION.

OPPONENTS SOMBERLY RECITE EVERY REPORT OF ANTICIPATED INSURANCE RATE INCREASES, WITHOUT NOTING THAT THE LAW CALLS FOR SUBSIDIES TO OFFSET THOSE HIKES.

THEY REPEAT AD NAUSEUM A PROJECTION FROM THE CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE THAT THE HEALTH CARE LAW COULD RESULT IN AS MANY AS 800,000 AMERICANS BEING UNEMPLOYED, NOT MENTIONING THAT THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE THE CBO EXPECTS TO RETIRE VOLUNTARILY ONCE THEY NO LONGER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SPENDING ALL OF THEIR RETIREMENT SAVINGS ON EXORBITANT HEALTH CARE COSTS.

OBAMACARE HATERS ARE TOO FIXATED ON THEIR CAUSE TO REALIZE IT IS DOOMED. THE CONSUMER PROTECTIONS ALREADY IN PLACE ARE POPULAR, EVEN IF THE LAW ITSELF ISN’T. HAVING COME THIS FAR, WE CAN’T GO BACK TO THE OLD WAY, IN WHICH THE ONLY REAL GUARANTEE OF BEING ABLE TO AFFORD HEALTH CARE WAS TO NEVER, EVER GET SICK.

The jalopy called health care reform needs money for parts and is carrying too much excess baggage. But it will continue to lurch forward, the journey made easier as the forecast disaster fails to materialize.

      • RS employees have a prominent role in Obamacare, but their union wants no part of the law.

National Treasury Employees Union officials are urging members to write their congressional representatives in opposition to receiving coverage through President Obama’s health care law.

The union leaders are providing members with a form letter to send to the congressmen that says “I am very concerned about legislation that has been introduced by Congressman Dave Camp to push federal employees out of the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program and into the insurance exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act.”

The NTEU represents 150,000 federal employees overall, including most of the nearly 100,000 IRS workers.
