World is getting smaller still. Disbursed tactical and strategic forces will continue to be a requirement to protect our interests. Notions that a less engaged US will mitigate risk is naïveté - vacuums get filled. The best way to deal with China is to support the growth in their economy which will likely result in demands for more political freedom while maintaining a strong Far East military deterrence. From today's Washington Times.
"Chinese state-run media revealed for the first time this week that Beijing’s nuclear submarines can attack American cities as a means to counterbalance U.S. nuclear deterrence in the Pacific.
On Monday, leading media outlets including China Central TV, the People’s Daily, the Global Times, the PLA Daily, the China Youth Daily and the Guangmin Daily ran identical, top-headlined reports about the “awesomeness” of the People's Liberation Army navy’s strategic submarine force.
“This is the first time in 42 years since the establishment of our navy’s strategic submarine force that we reveal on such a large scale the secrets of our first-generation underwater nuclear force,” the Global Times said in a lengthy article titled “China for the First Time Possesses Effective Underwater Nuclear Deterrence against the United States.”
The article features 30 photos and graphics detailing, among other things, damage projections for Seattle and Los Angeles after being hit by Chinese nuclear warheads and the deadly radiation that would spread all the way to Chicago."
As always elk, I just don't get your point - we've had the only truly global navy ever. Should we be embarrassed by that? What I'm talking about is as other countries are expanding their capabilities and reach is not the time for the US to be reducing our global presence. I'm fine with doing thing smarter and with technology but we can let others gain strategic advantage over us anywhere.
Beach - we borrow money from China to protect asian countries from China. We borrow money from South Korea to protect South Korea from China......we borrow money from European countries to protect them from Russia - you see how insane this is? Let us ramp down and them ramp up on their own military if they think China will just take over the world militarily. The military and military contractors is one huge jobs/entitlement project that produce things we don't need......you want to cut entitlements, there is a good place to cut back.
While the military budget is certainly large, it pales in comparison to our entitlement programs, so while we do sell debt to fund stuff, you can as easily say that we sell debt to pay of rour parents and soon our retirements.
Flop, I know its not popluar now and never really has been, but the role that we play in the world is critical to our security and many other nations. Its the way it is. Most everyone an think of what things would be like without a strong US.
Theres, name a country that China has in invaded in the last 50 years...........I am waiting.............now name all the countries the USA has invade in the past 50 years.........I'll give ya a week to figure that one out. Also name when China ever used anuclear weapon,on another country..........you can't because they never have................but America has.
You really are a right-wing nutjob, so afraid of the Big Red Machine........go hide under your bed.
Keep, unfortunately, you sir are the one to go hide under ya bed.
This is how low information and dense you are not to know about or heard about the Spratly Islands, ( the Scarborough Shoal, in the South China sea ). China currently have outposts on these Spratly island chains, that I dare you to tell this board, who the Spratly belongs to. Also this summer, China invaded some Islands owned by our Japanese allies. So Keep, please stay under ya bed and wallow in ya ignorance....bwahahaha
I'll give you ONE YEAR to tell this board about China and the Spratly Islands. Rally ya cut n' paste low info dummies to ya rescue, or phone a dummy if ya choose....bwahahahahahaha.
I am waiting..............................................................................snooze, urrrrrr!!!!!
Keep, you and your lot are so freakin short sighted. What China has done the past 50 years is irrelevant, although I can point to a number of regional issues, it's the next 50 to be concerned with. They clearly flex their muscle in their own back yard. Korea, disputed island in the Sea of Japan, Taiwan, India as just some quick examples. The fact that they are building a nuclear capability deploy able off our coast should be evidence enough of the need for deterrence. Do you think that Taiwan would be independent today but for our deterrence of China?
But my point goes far beyond China. There are plenty of emerging actors with the ability to cause major problems on a regional scale where our interests are involved. Having deployed resources acts as a deterrent and gives us the ability to react quickly to protect those interests and those of our allies. Example: sure we invaded Iraq, but for our ability what would Kuwait and even Saudi Arabia look like today? Former Yugoslavia? Would Israel exist today without our support and implied deterrence? Most important do you see these types of situations increasing or waning in the future. Wake the F up to the real world.
I am not worried about China ... but you should be very worried. My contacts in Shanghai and Beijing told me that if the launch any missiles, etc there are aimed at your house and it will be 'pinpoint accuracy' thus no collateral damage !!
