Don't see why Google would need to buy the company, rather than just equipment. What I have wondered is whether there are any advantages to a phone manufacturer (or software developer like Google) owning a telecom equipment manufacturer. Would it provide any advantages in terms of developing phones or ecosystems, or better relations with network operators, that would make such a purchase advantageous? Samsung appears to be rapidly moving into the field of selling telecom equipment (they shared the small cell order from Sprint with ALU) and, of course, Nokia is in the business. Is there any reason why a company like Google or Apple or Microsoft should buy a company like ALU to keep up with Samsung?
