    Trends in the government power

Shifts in government power and influence in the economy and society across the ages, Western Civilization:

    Increasing (I+), not increasing (I-)

    Period 1, 1651-1713, I+
    Period 2, 1714-1740, I-
    Period 3, 1740-1919, I+
    Period 4, 1919-1932, I-
    Period 5, 1933-1991, I+
    Period 6, 1992-2014, I-
    Period 7, 2015-????, I+

Periods 2, 4, 6 were marked by depressions, speculative bubbles, and many economic disasters.
Periods 1, 3, 5 were marked by the building up government, education systems, nationalism, military power, big corporations, and expanding big government/big business partnerships in the sciences and industry - sometimes called the military industrial complex, sometimes called other things...

1651 is a convenient starting point because that was when England really began its Imperial career, and started extending the power of state massively.

period 6 starts with the collapse of the Soviet Union and runs through the fad of free market, free enterprise ideology that followed it across America and Europe...

period 7 will start when the GOP loses the next election

    • Does it really matter whether the jobs come from private enterprise or from the govt. - or both? The Scandinavians appear to be doing well compared to us.(USA). One has to do that which bears results and forget about religion or ideologies.
