GE gave Houston power executives a presentation Friday on its latest power plant technology, meant to help increase reliance on renewable forms of power.

But the GE systems runs on natural gas.

The systems help improve the use of renewable energy sources, however, because they can start up quickly and generate a lot of power, almost on demand. That makes them a reliable backup option to solar and wind generators at times when the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing, said Jonas Seyppel, a senior product marketing manager for GE Energy.

One type of plant design could go from operating at a low level, with a capacity of 105 megawatts, to a high rate of 750 megawatts within 30 minutes, he said.

Seyppel and other GE representatives toured interested customers through an 88-foot-long truck trailer display filled with models and video screens. The trailer, which expanded to a width of 22 feet, was parked at Minute Maid Park on Friday for the presentations.

GE’s latest natural gas combined-cycle power plant design is more efficient than any other plant of its kind, according to the company.

The design uses natural gas turbines, which each have a capacity of 250 megawatts. The exhaust heat from those turbines is used to produce steam, which can power steam turbines.

Those steam turbines have a capacity of 250 megawatts as well, Seyppel said, while describing a plant concept. That gives the plant an efficiency level of more than 61 percent, he said.
