I bought Nike stock in the mid fifties back in Sept. 97. I've been holding in since then. I think it's one of the most recognized brands in the world. I also think it's global potential is limitless for the next decade or so (I'm a LONG TERM investor).
My question: Is Nike the same as a fashion company? I'm curious? I think that Coke sells more and more every year - great stock but really expensive? Nike is comparably cheap! Part of Nike is sports - a fast growing area. They have a 47% market share of the footwear market. My question is if Nike is a fashion related stock - will it be able to maintain it's dominance? I don't like the thought of a fashion stock, but some seem to thrive. What makes one brand popular and another not? I think Levis have been around for more than 100 years and they still seem popular. What drives this? Polo and Calvin Klein seem to do well (esp. in foreign markets), whereas LA Gear just went bankrupt. Somebody help me. I've been banging my head against the wall over Nike. Is it a fad that will disappear? or is it something that will be around for many years to come? I'd feel more confident with Coke or Kellogg's, but I could not resist the price of the most recognizable brand trading at a discount to the market. Please somebody give me some advice!!!
