President of Avro, Gordon Crawford, is furious. Twenty minutes after Diefenbaker's speech in the House, the 14,525 employees learn by the voice of a speaker they are dismissed. A small number will be rehired, but the vast majority of them are unemployed. In one fell swoop, Canada lost a third of its aviation industry. The surprise was total for employees. While they expected a decrease in work, but not a complete loss.
A real brain drain ensues. Engineers go to live in the U.S. or Europe and participate in major projects such as Apollo and Gemini space programs, aircraft or, like the Concorde. The Canadian aerospace industry will 30 years to recover. Canada will build more combat aircraft and will continue to purchase from the Americans.
