The government shutdown will hurt sales

Right now there are millions of people worrying about whether they will receive their pay checks (or social security checks) or not. This will cut into consumption in everything, and it can snowball to all industries and affect sales of everything if the government does not get its act together soon. Especially all level (federal, state, county, city, etc.) government purchases will be all frozen due to worry about their own budgets. The longer the federal government stays shut, the bigger the impact it will get. This is a real stupid self-inflicted wound.

    Sentiment: Strong Sell

    • Social security checks go out. Don't be a dumb ace, the government doesn't shut down completely. This is just a bump in the road and not even that big of a bump. Some on Wall Street are trying to make it look big for their own good. Some want the stock market down big time. Clinton experienced it last time for 3 weeks. He was a far better negotiator than Obama, but the end result will be about the same. The country survived and so did the stock market.

    • government shutdown won't hurt sales. As a matter of fact, the 800.000 plus employees will get paid for being at home when the shutdown ends. A credit card will work if they miss a check 'till then. Now the debt ceiling is another matter. As an air traffic controller at the world's busiest facility we used to have a saying...... "guy's got tunnel vision" When you had (especially a new trainee) a guy with 20 - 30 aircraft going through his sector but at one end was ten or so trying to be at the same place at the same time with weather (so they couldn't go where you wanted them to) new guys would tend to concentrate too much at that end instead of scanning constantly the WHOLE sector. Invaribly something would happen 200 miles away from the area he had "tunnel vision" on. The tea party congressional representatives are the very same. They are new and they have tunnel vision when it come to "(President) Obamacare". The bill passed Congress, was signed into law, was adjuticated at the Supreme Court level, and a main issue in two presidential campaigns ... yet .... over 45 bills leaving the house have had "kill (President) Obamacare" attached to them. Now it's the continuing resolution. They are new, they have tunnel vision and the "big picture" has been lost by them.

      oops sorry I rambled

    • The government shutdown is a shame. We are supposed to be the most powerful nation in the world but we can't even keep our doors open for business. And to add insult to injure, the ones who still get full paid and benefits- the congressmen, are the ones who causes the shutdown.

    • Actually 800000 people can go buy phones (shopping) during the week vs. busy activities on weekends where they didn't have time...shut-down is only temporary.

    • (1) Social Security is not affected by the shutdown.
      (2) Federal government employees that are on furlough, will be made whole (as they always had been when the government was back in business) of any lost time and wages during the shutdown.
      (3) Assuming you're talking about Apple (since this is where you posted), we are at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Any minor blip in sales during the shutdown, assuming it will not last more than a few weeks, will just postpone the sale to later this quarter. How, when people are not getting paid? Well, see the second bullet.

    • You have no idea how much international sales APPLE does ! Apple has US $ and international currency revenue. When US$ falls, Apple still makes money on currency exchange.

    • The immediate impact of the government shutdown is probably government and corporate (especially defense companies) sales. But if it drags on, it will expand to all other industries.
