Headline: "2012 Chicago homicides up 15% vs. 2011"
"Chicago this week ended 2012 with 513 homicides, a 15 percent increase from 448 homicides in 2011, RedEye determined based on data from the Medical Examiner's Office and police.
The police department announced Tuesday it ended the year with 506 homicides.
Unlike the police department, RedEye organizes homicides based on the date the incident occurred, not the date the victim died. RedEye also includes fatal shootings where charges may not have been brought against the shooter because the shooting was an accident or in self-defense.
Both the police and RedEye do not count in their totals fatal shootings by police officers and DUI incidents that result in homicide charges."
