    GTAT Sapphire Presentation

    Does anyone know how GT Sapphire compares against Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (the presentations from GT are against GG 2)?

    • The Presentation Dated 5/22 is on the GTAT website. Oh man Corning is F&#*@ed! All they have to do is get a small percentage of the screen protector, OE screen, and watch market. The revenue umber are astronomical. I read it earlier and bought more in pre-market, a practice i very rarely do but I will be out of pocket all day no choice.

    • Google " triple strength gorilla glass" and read the zdnet article. Cornings claim is "3 times more DAMAGE resistant" not scratch, not shatter.. meaning marketing hype and subjective.

      The graph provided doesn't show it's better between 0 and 6 Newtons of force. But you appear to have swallowed the hype hook, line & sinker!

      If you look at the error bars in the graph above, one can make the case that there really isn't a difference until 8 Newtons of force (1.8 lbs). It also shows that some of the samples were WORSE than Gen 2Look at how the error-bar "whiskers" of Gen 3 extend into and below the Gen 2 stuff.

      Just to clear up some speculation in regards to Gorilla Glass 3 vs. 2 using science and official specification documentation.

      The difference in brittleness (correlated by Young's Modulus) between Gorilla Glass 2 and 3 is 71.5 and 69.3 GPa respectively. This is a 3% difference, and barely any difference. Just as a comparison: glass is usually around 50-90 GPa, mother of pearl is on average 70 GPa. (lower=more elastic, higher=more brittle)

      The axial stress (aka Poisson's Ratio) is almost exactly the same, 0.21 to 0.22, which can easily be down to systematic and rounding errors.

      The fracture toughness (how hard it is for a crack to elongate/propogate) actually decreased from 0.68 to 0.66 MPa m^0.5, so if you have a crack in your screen, it will spread 3% easier.

      And finally, the hardness of the glass did not change. It is just as easy to scratch a Gorilla Glass 2 panel as it is to scratch a Gorilla Glass 3 panel.

    • Gg3 is not much different. In fact even one of cornings charts shows gg2 outperforms gg3 in certain ranges of impacts tests. You can also find drop tests on you tube showing little to no improvement.
