Absolutely everyone that I have talked to about Famous Dave's is very upbeat about the food -- clearly a key for a restaurant stock. Perhaps southern tastes are different when it comes to barbeque. It seems to me, however, that even if Dave sticks to the north country, there is plenty of room to expand.
We're obviously not alone in thinking that Dave's ribs are good as he has won at least two different sauce contests around the country. Dave's wins over the next closest competitor in the Twin Cities market by a 4-1 margin according to a local magazine poll.
Takeout is a key part of the food scene for the future and about a third of Dave's business is takeout.
The kind of food served at Dave's does not require hiring expensive chefs. They should be able to keep food prep expenses under those of many restaurants.
The theme restaurant industry is clearly somewhat out of favor at the moment making this a good time in my opinion to pick up some of Dave's stock.
Lohman's Plaza is about 2-3 miles SW of 494 and France, in the heart of West Bloomington suburbia. There used to be a restaurant called The Cottage in Lohman's Plaza; I wonder if Dave's is remodeling that location, or building a new restaurant in the huge parking lot? It's 98th and Normandale. The demographics look good for the neighborhood. A large community college nearby, and a large population of "young urban professionals" also all around it. tb
This location is in a strip mall in West Bloomington (not near Southdale). In my opinion this is a B location, certainly not an A location. This strip mall has several Hair salons, an appliance dealer, a womens dress shop and a grocery store. Its on a main street (Normandale Blvd.) so there is decent traffic flow. I remain skeptical on this location, but it is in prestigious West Bloomington where there is lots of money.
