PUMA to become Program of Record

The NDIA's National Defense Magazine blog just published a story titled "Army Unmanned Aircraft Programs: Winners and Losers".

One winner is the Puma, a small hand-launched UAV that small units are using for reconnaissance and surveillance. The Army requested the system under a rapid fielding initiative in 2007 to complement its other small drone, the Raven. Soldiers were demanding an all-weather capable aircraft with longer endurance and a gimbaled camera.

[UAS Program Manager Col. Tim] Baxter said the Puma will be transitioning to a program of record.

Attaining such status generally protects programs from budget axes and formally integrates them into the Army.

Note that Raven is already a POR. Also interesting that the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), responding to an urgent request, ordered 23 Wasp AE's for Afghanistan (see SPRAL1-12-R-0018 on FBO).

All this further cements AVAV's status as preeminent supplier of SUAS.
