interesting comments from new 512GB Vector review from Tweaktown
these comments caught my attention:
“We already have a few drives in hand that launch at CES 2013 and nothing from that stack is ready to take on Vector for the performance crown.”
“OCZ's isn't the only manufacturer limiting single queue performance. Vertex 4 and Vector started this type of programming, but we have a drive in from Toshiba and another from SanDisk that do this as well. More on those products in the coming weeks.”
Last week I noticed the Sandisk Extreme 240GB was on firesale for ridiculously low pricing and wondered if they were clearing inventory for a new drive. Based on these comments, it seems like Sandisk is preparing to unviel a new drive at CES. Either they are using a new controller that is programmed like OCZs or they are using the BF3 controller. I doubt very much its BF3 but "Vertex 4 and Vector started this type of programming" means that no other currently released controller/drive do this so what could it be? a new Sandforce controller?
I remember JJP said a new sandforce controller was due out within the next 6 months so it is possible that this reviewer may have a beta sample which may be unveiled at CES but wouldn't go on sale for a while. On the other hand, it could be a TLC drive using BF3 since I doubt OCZ would license out an MLC version due to competition unless they are actively seeking to get bought out and the more controller contracts/revenue, the more attractive their controller would be to a buyer. Now is the time to push for a sale when they have the newest and best controller because the longer they wait, the more time passes for other controller companies to improve their design which would lower the value of BF3. As of now, the only other controller that supports TLC is Samsungs and obviously nobody can license that.
