Gulf oil spill: Test of underwater dispersants is a success
May 1, 2010 | 9:12 am
In a rare example of good news in the battle to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil leak, a BP spokeswoman said that a test run of a plan to spray dispersant on the leak at the source some 5,000 feet underwater was successful, and that a larger-scale application of the dispersant would be applied beginning Saturday.
BP spokeswoman Marti Powers, stationed in Venice, La, said that robot submarines sprayed a relatively small amount of the dispersant on the oil Friday evening, and observed it working. The chemical breaks oil into particles, which then sink to the ocean floor where it is eaten by various organisms there, Powers said.

WHAT A JOKE!
The cameras are cloudy and almost blind, and can only see a few feet in front of them at 5000' deep.
They think dumping more chemicals will stop a geyser from leaking the majority of the oil into the underwater current and onto the surface?
"They think dumping more chemicals will stop a geyser from leaking..."
They think no such thing. You miss the point. It's not meant to stop the leak it's to deal with the oil already spilled.
Read more carefully. Turn off the media. Go for a walk. Breathe.
Oh sure. We can put some chemicals down there and that will take care of the gazillion gallons of oil coming out of the earth.
Gimme a break. There is nothing they can do now. These four companies- BP, HAL, CAM, RIG- caused this disaster. In the legal sense they were the proximate cause. If they had not drilled this would not have happened. If everything had been done diffently, it would not have occured.
I read some other idiot who argues drilling is much safer than NASA missions. That may be true, but if a space shuttle explodes, it does not destroy 25% of the US seafood supply and 40% of US wetlands. A blown NASA mission does not impact hundreds of thousands of jobs, thousands of miles of coastline, real estate values, and whole industries.
This is a disaster.
BP will pay for what they did to America. HAL, CAM, and RIG will pay too. They should all have known better.
There is no crap about this being a perfect storm. They should have had more safeguards and been more careful.
BP to ZERO in weeks!
PS- no one thought Lehman and Bear Stearns would go to zero either. What about Wachovia and AIG? So many dummies have short memories and think it cannot happen again.
I got a quesiton, afte it sinks and "dissipates" what happen to it. It a hydrocarbon so its not goign to naturally breakdown for a long, long time.
I am not convinced htis will not create more longer time environmental problems.
The earth has all sorts of microbes and ways to repair itself. I question whether any of you are really interested but here goes:
"But cleaning that spill up was nothing compared to cleaning up the five hundred thousand tons of crude oil released into the water and soil surrounding the Mina Al-Ahmadi terminal during the 1990 Persian Gulf War. Newspapers around the world mourned the loss of plant and animal life in the region from the largest oil spill in history. Two years later, however, large mats of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, were growing on top of the oil-soaked soil. Embedded in the mats of cyanobacteria were millions of other bacteria, busy eating the oil and breaking it down into carbon and energy."
"Researchers found a way to simulate these mats of microbes by using powdered clay sprinkled on the oil. The clay floated on the surface of the water and absorbed the oil, creating little islands where bacteria could float and feed. In one experiment, bacteria broke down three-quarters of a test spill in less than five weeks, a process that in nature would have taken closer to fifty years."

Don't be ignorant. It gets broken down it doesn't just sit on the ocean floor.
Would you rather have it washing up on the beaches you all are screaming about?
Get a grip!
There's no pleasing some people. You'd bitch if you won the lottery.
