HOUSTON (Dow Jones)-- BP PLC (BP) is still preparing to plug a deepwater well at the origin of a massive oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico with heavy drilling fluids, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
"Diagnostic testing is still going on," said a spokeswoman at the company's London headquarters.
The U.S. Coast Guard said earlier that BP had authorization to proceed with the so-called "top-kill" measure, which involves pumping drilling fluids into the Macondo deepwater well. The well began leaking crude at a rate exceeding 5,000 barrels a day after the explosion and sinking of Transocean Ltd.'s (RIG) Deepwater Horizon rig more than a month ago. The rig was drilling for BP.
