Can anyone explain why BP did not just unbolt the flange? Surely the robots must be capable of using a wrench! Perhaps its a vision problem. With so much oil pouring it might be hard to find the nuts!
Only a guess but those bolts and the flange itself might have been welded on before the unit was lowered down originally.

My bad. They are taking off the bolts now. This is great news, it means the will try and bolt on the new "riser" from above. This will be completely controlled within hours.
Can't the drill pipe be cut?.Don't see any need for it now.
or saw the bolt heads or nuts off?
