I have been a CHS stockholder for years. Currently I only have a 1500 share investment in my Roth IRA. I never invested in CHS because I "loved their clothes". I invested in the company because of performance in the stock price and have made a lot of money because of those investments. I am a 50 plus year old woman and have shopped at Chicos here and there mostly online for the past 6 years which coincides with my investment in the company. I love clothes and am attracted to current trends that are tasteful. Therefore, I have not been shopping at Chicos for the past 2 years. I live in Richmond, VA and there are currently two stores in Richmond. One was established probably 5 or 6 years ago and the other one I think 3 years ago. For the first time I went to the first one last week which is located in a prime spot near the University of Richmond and upper class homes. The store is beautiful and I was totally amazed at the inventory. I happily made a large purchase which consisted of outfits for the Fall. I commented that the store was impressive and the salesperson said that the store was redone earlier in the year. This was a Thursday around noon and there were probably 8 to 10 shoppers there and they were all making purchases. Due to what I saw in the store I feel that Chicos is on the right track to turning around their styles and that investing in the company now would be a good investment.
With a p/e of 18ish, a peg of .8 and p/cash flow of 12.3......this looks like quite a deal at current price. Thanks for your story. Good to hear some positive thoughts. Anyone wiling to ride out near term volatility should be pleased later.
I had a similar experience. After the Gralnicks left, the clothes became dull and derivative -- imitating their old styles but without the originality, quality, and charm. Subsequent catalogues and occasional visits just reinforced that impression -- until the most recent catalogue, which had some of the old flair. That plus the 50% off coupon were enough to tempt me back for one more visit and I was amazed. I left with a jacket and 4 shirts - saw lots of customers too. I think Chicos has its mojo back, and I'm back in the stock.
