If you go to UDC's home page and click on Events on left and then Oppenheimer on lower right you should be able to register and watch their presentation from Aug 14th which includes a slide set downloadable at lower right of tool bar during presentation called "Color is Universal" in the presentation and slides they discuss patent expiration. I strongly suggest you do your homework given that they've addressed your concern at the conference and listen to what they have to say and what their slide shows. Sometimes Seeking alpha offers transcripts of these conferences as well.
"I know they're working jointly with Samsung on new patents going forward "
And how do you know that ?
It seems that you confused on what is license and what is patent.
Patents don't sustain anyone but US Patent Office.
Well, I'm fairly certain that I read in a recent Motley Fool article that they are currently working on a joint research effort and that Universal Display would not be able to license that specific patent out to anyone else. It was mentioned in the article explaining that the Novaled purchase by Samsung is not a threat to UD. In any case, I can't seem to find it now. I did find the article I believe stated this claim, but it looks like he edited it and removed it from the article.
2017 is when the fundamental patents expire? My concern is that the analysts believe that the oled TV market won't pick up until 2016-2017. They've got a very small window to make some money and catch up to their P/E before the patents expire. What does the future hold for them after 2017?
