The stock is so heavily shorted there are not any long (margined) shares to borrow. Very common situation. For large traders, the firms will go out and borrow shares from another firm (and charge the short seller a monthly fee to maintain the short position). For small traders...you are out of luck. Buy some puts if you must but, caution, they are VERY expensive (because everyone wants to short this stock). If you still must short this story, do a derivative trade....short RLGY. The stock acts sick. Similar business. Just reported another lackluster quarter and you can borrow the shares (I have been short off and on for some time now). And, you'll be able to sleep at night. If you really MUST short this stock, wait until it is cut in half and then tries to rally. That rally is likely to fail. THAT is when its the safest time to short a monster like this.
