FCEL not anywhere near for vehicles, good for utilities.
FCEL appears to be making good progress in being a very clean power source for converting natural gas into electricity for utilities. They have large power plants in operation and contracts for more.
Fuel cell cars are extremely far in the future even with the various consortiums of auto companies development programs. They mentioned being fueled by hydrogen produced as a byproduct from the massive utility fuel cells. A better use for that hydrogen would be to use that as a fuel in a conventional gas fired utility plant, rather than try to build a national hydrogen vehicle fueling infrastructure.
For trucks, buses and taxis LNG and CNG is the way to go. The economics make sense.
For consumer passenger vehicles the Chevrolet Volt is the best alternative fuel car choice. It has better acceration than the plug-in Prius. Volt's EV range is 38 miles. The plug-in Prius EV range is only eleven miles and the Prius is higher priced. When Volt's gasoline engine has to be used, it has a range of 300 miles.
The NHTSA has given top safety ratings to the Volt. The much publicized Volt fire OCCURED THREE WEEKS AFTER THE TEST CRASH AND THEY HAD IT STORED UPSIDE DOWN IN THEIR BONEYARD. The NHTSA said that there have been NO accidental VOLT vehicle fires reported to them. More than 37,000 Chevrolet Volts are in use worldwide.

For those not familiar with the Chevrolet Volt, it is a plug-in hybrid with regenerative braking made by GM. It was developed before the "bail out", not with bail out money as some critics say. Car magazine testers write that the Volt has very lively performance when needed and that the gasoline motor takes effect smoothly. Owners that don't have long commutes report that they rarely buy gasoline. The gasoline motor does require premium gasoline but owners say they ordinarily don't have to use the gasoline engine much. Yes, there are government subsidies to purchasers as there also are for most alternative fuel cars, trucks, stations and fuels.
An even cleaner use for the byproduct hydrogen from the utility size fuel cells converting natural gas into electricity would be to cycle that hydrogen into another fuel stack right at the power plant to make electrcity.. Any burning process including internal combustion engines produces nitrogen oxides from the high heats reaction with the approximate 80% nitrogen in air. The advantage of the fuel cells os that they produce no or far less nitrogen oxide.
wskip, Does anyone have any information about Clean Energy Renewable Fuels (CERF) new projects? A couple of months ago i posted about Fair Oaks Farms arranging for a 42 semi CNG powered fleet.They are producing methane from dairy cow manure. Clean Energy has two public access CNG stations on I-65 in Indiana to facilitate this RNG operation.
